What are County Shoots?

During the month of July, disciplines hold a county shoot for all eligible and interested members. This is a fun competition and not a requirement to complete the Shooting Sports project. However, participation is encouraged because it is a good way to showcase your skills and measure your progress.

Don’t be intimidated—the competitions are divided by age division (juniors 8–13 and seniors 14–18) and by classes based on equipment. If you are a brand-new, 8-year-old 4-H member, you will NOT be competing against senior members who have been shooting for 10 years.

What are the requirements to participate in County Shoot?

  • Complete the orientation process.

  • Attend a minimum of four required practices for the discipline.

  • Register for your discipline’s county shoot before its deadline.

County shoots serve as qualifiers for the Colorado State 4-H Shooting Sports Championships (referred to as the State Shoot). Counties across Colorado send their teams of 6 members (5 members for Shotgun) per age division and class to compete in Pueblo, Colorado City, and Colorado Springs on August 22–23 and September 5–6. (Schedules for state shoot are posted on each discipline page under “Competitions,” but each member’s specific relay times will not be available until state shoot registration is completed at the end of July.)

What are the requirements to participate in State Shoot?

  • Submit your hunter education card by July 1, 2026 (on 4HOnline during enrollment or emailed to info@LC4HSS.org).

  • Complete Fair Entry for your Shooting Sports project by July 8, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. Sign up for Interview Judging as well.

  • Commit to being willing and able to travel to the state shoot on your county shoot registration.

  • Participate in the scheduled county shoot and qualify in the top 6 in your age division and class (top 5 for Shotgun).

  • Pay the state shoot fees by the deadline on July 24, 2026 by 12:00 noon. ($20 per participant plus $5 per class, except shotgun which charges $15 per class.)

  • Bring your project and record book to Interview Judging Day on July 28, 2026.

  • Exhibit your project and record book at the county fair and earn a blue or red ribbon.
